PDF/X-4 compliance check
Validate PDF/X-4 files — transparency-era print exchange, checked honestly.
What it checks
- Strict PDF/X-4 version-claim validation (a claim of "PDF/X-4" is not satisfied by an X-1a:2003 substring match — level tokens are compared exactly)
- Uncalibrated DeviceRGB usage, applying the different X-3 / X-4 rules for device color
- TrimBox and page-box nesting
- Effective image resolution and Total Area Coverage (TAC), including scn-set spot alternates
FAQ
PDF/X-4 vs PDF/X-1a — which should I send?
X-1a flattens and restricts to CMYK/spot; X-4 keeps live transparency and ICC color. Send what your printer requests — Preflight validates either claim exactly.
My file uses RGB — will it fail?
Under X-4 rules, calibrated color is acceptable; uncalibrated DeviceRGB is flagged per the standard-specific rule (X-3 and X-4 differ here, and the check applies the right one).
