An Enfocus PitStop alternative — for the automated half of the job

PitStop is a hands-on prepress editor. Preflight is automated document QC — API-first checks across five formats, from USPS barcodes to accessibility standards. Drop a file for a free structural scorecard, no signup.

PDF · AFP/MO:DCA · PCL · PostScript · IPDS — validated and reported, never edited.

Automation-first
REST API, CLI, and CI checks (beta) instead of click-through desktop fixups — QC that runs on every job, not when an operator remembers.
Beyond PDF
AFP/MO:DCA, PCL, PostScript, and IPDS parse to the same structural scorecard — the formats transactional mail actually ships in, which Acrobat plug-ins never see.
Mail compliance
USPS Intelligent Mail barcode validation including the USPS-B-3200 FCS round-trip, presort/field checks on AFP — checks a prepress editor does not attempt.
Accessibility standards
PDF/UA-1/-2, WCAG 2.1/2.2, Section 508 and EN 301 549 profiles with per-criterion Supports / Does not support / Not evaluated results.
Regression diff
Compare production runs against an approved baseline — catch template drift, not just per-file errors.
Honest reporting
Anything static analysis cannot determine is reported not-evaluable with a reason — never silently passed. Every check page documents its limits.

The honest framing: if your workflow is an operator opening files in Acrobat and fixing them by hand, PitStop Pro is built for exactly that and does it well. Preflight exists for everything that should not depend on a person remembering to check — every job, every format, in a pipeline, with results a compliance reviewer can defend. Teams often run both: an editor for fixups, Preflight as the gate.

Frequently asked questions

When is PitStop still the right tool?

When a prepress operator needs to interactively EDIT a PDF inside Acrobat — fix hairlines, remap spot colors, adjust boxes by hand. Preflight validates and reports; it deliberately does not edit your documents. Different job.

What about PitStop Server for automation?

PitStop Server is Enfocus’s separate hot-folder automation product (its own, higher-priced license). It automates PDF workflows well; it stays PDF-only and does not cover USPS mail checks, AFP/PCL/PostScript/IPDS, accessibility-standard reporting, or baseline regression diffs — which is the ground Preflight covers.

How does pricing compare?

PitStop Pro is roughly $40/mo or $480/yr per seat per the Enfocus site (verify — pricing changes; PitStop Server is quoted separately and higher). Preflight has a free anonymous analyzer and workspace plans from $49/mo with compliance modules at $49–79/mo — priced per team, not per desktop seat.

Can Preflight import PitStop preflight profiles?

No. Preflight ships its own deterministic, spec-traceable rulesets (PDF/X, PDF/A, PDF/UA, USPS and more) with pinnable versions, rather than importing third-party profile formats.

Can I try it without talking to anyone?

Yes — drop a file on the homepage for a free structural scorecard. No signup; anonymous uploads purge within 24 hours.
